Spatial Aspects
Iceland is unique in that it displays a wide range of landforms on Europe's second largest island. The tectonic and volcanic activity here can be directly related to island creation along the ridge. As Iceland is closer to Europe, it is included in the same category for historical, political, and cultural reasons. With the exception of volcanic ash, the geomorphological effects on Iceland stay close at home near the divergent boundary of the Eurasian and North American Plate. When considering volcanoes, the eruption and following ash release into the atmosphere can have drastic consequences on Europe and the rest of the World. Witnessed in 2012, the Eyjafjallajokul volcano eruption was explosive in nature and threw volcanic ash several miles into the atmosphere, halting traffic to and from the European mainland.
